1. Inspect your pipes for leaks
Keeping an eye out for leaky pipes is important year-round, but it’s especially important in the colder months.
The sub-zero temperatures (that we’re unfortunately no stranger to here in the UK) can cause even the smallest amount of water to freeze, which could potentially burst your pipes.
If you’re experiencing skyrocketing water bills, visible mould and mildew, and stained (or otherwise damaged) ceilings, you could have a leaky pipe on your hands – and you should call a professional plumber to come out and mend it for you.
2. Insulate any exposed pipes
Using heat tape or pipe insulation to insulate pipes in unheated areas of the home will help to prevent them from freezing.
Pipes in areas such as your loft, below your sink, and inside cupboards are more susceptible to freezing, so make sure to keep them protected in any way you can.
3. Open your cupboard doors
To keep pipes that are located inside cupboards warm, opening your cupboard and letting warm air in should be enough to stop them from freezing.
As you might have already guessed, this is the biggest problem your plumbing system will face this winter, so it’s vital to ensure you’re doing everything you can to keep your home warm.
4. Protect outdoor taps and hoses
With summer long gone, you can turn any outdoor taps off and put away your hose until it’s needed again in spring.
Before putting your hose safely away in the garage or shed, make sure any leftover water is drained from it to prevent it from freezing and bursting.
5. Schedule professional plumbing maintenance
Scheduling professional maintenance – including boiler servicing and pipe inspections – is one of the best things you can do to keep your plumbing system in working order.
Not only will this help to identify any problems with your plumbing system before they become a big issue in the depths of winter, but it can also prevent costly repairs down the line, too.
